sad old dog in shelter drawing

Old dog waits in the shelter

The tale of Sam was the first story that the author, Lynn Whitman, sent me when she asked me to illustrate her book. His story began with the words:
“My name is Sam. I just turned twelve, which means in dog years that I’m pretty old. I’m your typical unwanted dog, and I’ve spent most of my life in animal shelters.”
After reading Sam’s true story, I knew I had to be the illustrator for this book. In designing the illustrations for the book, I decided to begin each of the four dog’s stories with a b&w drawing. This sets the stage and contrasts with the colorful life that was to come for each of these lucky dogs. I confess that I was thinking about The Wizard of Oz and for a dog in a shelter a forever home must seem as magical as Oz. So here is my image of Sam, waiting for his forever home. His story is just one of four that are told by the author of this book.
